Tea Ceremony Experience Class for Hammond Pak Secondary College (Japan Education and Cultural Center of WA (JECCWA) in Tuart Hill, Western Australia)

20250822

On Friday, August 22nd, two of our members presented a Japanese tea ceremony demonstration for two groups of approximately 20 students each, accompanied by two teachers, from Years 7, 8, and 9 at Hammond Park Secondary College.

The students are currently studying Japanese, and the event was held at the Japan Education and Cultural Center of WA (JECCWA) in Tuart Hill.

We began the session with an engaging presentation on the history and cultural significance of the tea ceremony. Following this, we demonstrated the procedure for preparing tea using authentic utensils kindly provided by JECCWA.

The atmosphere was serene; the students remained quietly attentive throughout, and the sounds of birdsong from the surrounding Japanese garden added to the experience.

After observing the demonstration, the students were invited to participate. Each student enjoyed a traditional sweet before whisking their own bowl of matcha. The correct procedure for drinking tea was also explained and practiced. Many students were trying matcha for the first time, and several expressed that they enjoyed its unique taste.

The demonstration also provided an opportunity to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of JECCWA’s tea utensils, enriching the overall cultural experience.
