Tea Ceremony Experience Class (Kolbe Catholic College in Perth, Western Australia)
We demonstrated the Edo Senke tea ceremony at the "International Family Night" at Presbyterian Ladies' College in Perth, Western Australia.
This school has students from various countries, including Chinese and African descent. This is the first year that the event is called "International Family Night", and they had not had many opportunities to introduce Japanese culture until now.
One of the organizers, a student who served as the International Captain, is a Japanese student enrolled in Year 12 (third year of high school) here, and she wanted to introduce Japanese culture at the PLC, so she won the presentation and was able to have a tea ceremony demonstration and tea ceremony experience.
Ten people were selected by lottery from the visitors to experience the tea ceremony for the first and second sessions. We had the ten people seated around the tea ceremony seat.
Using PowerPoint, we briefly explained the history, beliefs, how to prepare and drink tea, and then moved on to a demonstration. After that, the participants made their own tea, and we answered their questions.
Q. Why do we bow?
A. It is a part of Japanese culture, and we bow to show respect and gratitude, and when greeting.
