Tea Scoop Carving Experience with Mr. Izumi Moriwaki
We were fortunate to receive the expert guidance of Izumi Moriwaki, a professional architect and chashaku craft teacher, who drove all the way from Sanda City to Kochi. The participants were delighted, with many expressing that they had gained a "treasured experience." The day was devoted to crafting tea scoops (chashaku) and creating bamboo tube cases with lids made from carefully selected, precious old wood, emphasizing the rich tradition of craftsmanship. Each participant also engaged in the rough-bending of soot bamboo. After lunch, we enjoyed a delicious Kuro-mame Yokan (black bean jelly dessert) prepared by Mr. Moriwaki. Extracting the Yokan from a prepared bamboo tube added a delightful touch to the experience. We savored a serving of "Seijin no Shiro" matcha from Fukujuen in a matcha bowl crafted by Hiroyuki Doi from Odo-yaki pottery. Participants crafted impressive tea scoops and thoughtfully named them. They then personally inscribed these names on the tubes with a brush, creating uniquely splendid tea scoops that shone even brighter with their individual inscriptions.
