Antique-Silk Fukusa Workshop
(Ecoru Togoshi, Shinagawa, Tokyo)
Architect Yumiko Nakajima fell in love with the world of vintage fabric when she discovered a piece at an antique market, leading her to start making tea utensils covers, fukusa, and other tea ceremony items, eventually prompting her to start practicing the tea ceremony itself. For this workshop, a wide variety of fabrics were prepared, and she even handmade a special ironing board for making fukusa.
Participants began by selecting two pieces of fabric from the vast array provided, listened to the explanation of the process, and then sewed and finished their own fukusa. As Ms. Nakajima offered individual guidance, she also spoke about the fabric, conveying her deep affection for it. The chance to see a variety of vintage fabric materials and her various works made it an exciting time to dive deeper into the world of fabric.
