NPO Kissako Cha Know You
Kintsugi Workshop for Beginners
(Kochi)

We were honored to have guidance from the potter Mr. Akira Kosaka and his wife during our beginner's workshop on Kintsugi, the art of repairing broken pottery. Born and raised in Tokyo, Mr. Kosaka was drawn to the charm of Kochi and moved to Susaki City in Kochi Prefecture 25 years ago. He established his workshop and gallery on a hill overlooking Nomi Bay.
The process of Kintsugi he teaches is like that of traditional lacquer repair, but it employs a unique technique of using four types of adhesive and sprinkling brass powder, a method original to Mr. Kosaka. Even the participants trying Kintsugi for the first time managed to master the technique in a short period, thanks to Mr. Kosaka's careful instruction and their own perseverance, and they were able to beautifully restore broken pottery pieces.
We started off with the concept of a "kissako", offering tea and sweets to our participants. This not only set a pleasant mood but also further enhanced the atmosphere of the workshop.
