Tea Scoop Carving Experience with Mr. Izumi Moriwaki
On June 25th and 26th, we invited architect Mr. Izumi Moriwaki from Sanda City, Hyogo, to guide us in creating our own tea scoops. Traditionally, tea scoops were carved by the tea master themselves, including the legendary Sen no Rikyu. They play an important role in the once-in-a-lifetime hospitality of a tea ceremony. The soot-blackened bamboo, extracted from the waste materials of a demolished old house and aged over approximately 200 years, is extremely valuable. Through the experience of creating tea scoops, we were profoundly reminded of the importance of cherishing things. We were also deeply impressed by the superior traditional skills embodied in the tools we use casually every day.
